Letter from the editor

Salam, dear reader,

Ramadan always manages to remind us of the strength of our community. Despite the devastating state of the world, we still find ways to connect with one another over the course of these thirty days: making the two a.m. pilgrimage to IHOP for suhoor, painting signs to raise at a protest for Palestine, standing shoulder to shoulder during taraweeh. These small moments of togetherness serve as a true testament to the durability of our ties to one another as Muslim Houstonians.

It is fitting, then, that we are launching The Houston Crescent during this holy month. This is a publication, first and foremost, about community. We hope that this publication—the first youth led Muslim newspaper in Houston—can finally shine a light on our stories and amplify our voices. For too long, we have waited for coverage and representation in the media. But after years of asking and little response, we realize that this is an issue we need to resolve ourselves.

The Crescent will cover everything from events to restaurants, with a commitment to publishing content that is relevant to Houston’s Muslim community. Do not hesitate to contact us if there is something that you want us to write about. The majority of our staff is comprised of students, ranging from elementary to high school. While this means that our work is not Pulitzer Prize-winning (yet!), we hope to foster an environment of encouragement as our young writers embark on their first foray into the world of journalism.

We’re so excited to spotlight our community and the incredible organizations, events, and individuals within it. Thank you for your support and trust.

Ramadan Kareem,

The Editorial Staff of The Houston Crescent
